China Reinforces Global Multilateralism, Peace, Sustainable Development
Chinese leaders have reiterated their strong support for the United Nations and multilateralism in recent diplomatic engagements and statements. President Xi Jinping emphasized China’s commitment to being a dependable U.N. partner and upholding true multilateralism during his meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres ahead of the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. China’s Ambassador to Nigeria highlighted China’s role in promoting global peace, unity, and adherence to the U.N. Charter, tying these commitments to the historical sacrifices made during World War II. Ahead of the SCO Summit, Chinese officials pledged to enhance cooperation among member states, advocate for World Trade Organization reform, and protect the multilateral trading system from unilateral tariffs and disruptions. Additionally, the U.N. Global Compact’s CEO praised China’s Belt and Road Initiative for its contributions to advancing the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing green growth, job creation, and sustainable infrastructure investments. These developments underscore China’s efforts to position itself as a leader in international cooperation, peace, and sustainable development.
