Manchester Synagogue Vehicle Ramming, Stabbings; Suspect Shot
A deadly attack outside a synagogue in north Manchester on Yom Kippur, in which a vehicle was driven into pedestrians and the assailant then stabbed people, killed two and seriously wounded others before the suspect was shot and is believed to be dead. British police are treating the incident as a terrorist attack and said suspicious items were found on the attacker; the prime minister convened an emergency Cobra meeting. The Community Security Trust said it was working with police and the local Jewish community as extra police protection was deployed to synagogues across the UK. London’s Metropolitan Police and other forces said there was no indication of an increased national threat but nonetheless boosted patrols and resources around synagogues and Jewish venues as a precaution. In the U.S., Connecticut, Massachusetts (including Brookline and Newton), Washington, D.C., and Fairfax County increased visible and reassurance patrols at places of worship during the High Holy Days while noting no known credible local threats. Authorities urged vigilance, reporting of hate crimes, and continued communication with religious leaders as investigations continue.
