UK launches restorative justice scheme for Post Office Horizon scandal victims
The UK government, Post Office Ltd, and Fujitsu Services Limited have launched a restorative justice programme for sub-postmasters affected by the Horizon IT scandal, which falsely accused over 900 sub-postmasters of embezzlement due to faulty software. The programme, recommended by the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry chaired by Sir Wyn Williams, aims to provide a structured approach to acknowledge and repair the harm caused, including face-to-face meetings with representatives from Fujitsu and the Post Office, as well as the Department for Business and Trade. This initiative includes "Listening and Learning Circles" facilitated by the Restorative Justice Council and is designed to create a safe space for victims and their families to share experiences and begin healing, with an initial pilot phase and plans for a formal programme launch in April 2026. The programme also extends support to the children and families of affected sub-postmasters, addressing the broader impact of the scandal beyond financial compensation. Financial redress continues through existing schemes, but the restorative justice effort represents a significant step towards rebuilding trust and providing meaningful emotional support. The initiative is partially funded by Fujitsu and aims to complement ongoing compensation efforts by focusing on dialogue and emotional recovery.
