Waterbury Man Charged With Murder of Teen After July Shooting

Shamar Atwater, 40, of Waterbury, Connecticut, was arrested and charged with the murder of 17-year-old Carizma Fox following a July 11 shooting on Willow Street. Police arrested Atwater without incident at a Watertown residence after tracking him down with the help of a search warrant. The shooting occurred after a disturbance involving multiple individuals, and Fox, a student at Enlightenment School who was looking forward to her senior prom, died from her gunshot wounds at a hospital. Atwater faces multiple charges including murder, criminal use of a weapon, unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, and illegal sale or transfer of firearms. He is being held on a $3 million bond and is scheduled for arraignment in Waterbury Superior Court, where he may enter a plea and seek bond reduction. Fox's family remembered her as a bright, witty young woman who could uplift others and was deeply loved by her family.
