Walmart-backed OnePay Launches Unlimited 5G Wireless Plans
OnePay, a fintech startup majority-owned by Walmart, has launched OnePay Wireless, a branded wireless service offering unlimited 5G data, talk, and text for $35 per month via the OnePay app. Developed in partnership with mobile services startup Gigs and operating on AT&T's network, the plan features no credit checks or activation fees and can be activated with just a few clicks. This move aligns with OnePay's strategy to become a comprehensive "super app" for US consumers by integrating telecommunications with financial services, similar to efforts by fintechs like Klarna and Nubank. Gigs CEO Hermann Frank highlighted that embedding wireless plans into fintech platforms reduces customer acquisition costs for carriers, enabling more affordable pricing for consumers, potentially about half of typical phone bills. Launched in 2021 with venture backing from Ribbit Capital, OnePay already offers a wide range of financial products, including debit and credit cards, high-yield savings, and buy now, pay later loans, aiming to deepen customer engagement and loyalty through a diversified service offering. OnePay has confirmed the wireless service launch but declined further comment.
