Uber Accuses Over 100 Sexual Assault Plaintiffs of Submitting Fake Receipts in US Litigation
Uber is facing nationwide federal litigation involving over 2,450 lawsuits alleging sexual assault and harassment by its drivers, with an additional several hundred lawsuits in San Francisco Superior Court. In recent court filings, Uber accused more than 100 plaintiffs of submitting fake or doctored ride receipts as evidence to support their claims, citing issues such as impossible timestamps, changed driver names, bogus surcharges, and formatting inconsistencies. The company has asked U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer to require these plaintiffs to either provide valid proof or justify why their claims should not be dismissed. Uber maintains it should not be held liable for the criminal conduct of its drivers, emphasizing that its background checks and disclosures were adequate. Plaintiffs’ attorneys argue that some victims may lack receipts because rides were ordered by others and that the focus on documentation may unfairly disadvantage guest passengers who face higher risks. The multidistrict litigation, consolidating thousands of similar claims, aims to streamline pretrial proceedings and facilitate victims coming forward, with initial hearings scheduled for December.
