Israel Warns Unilateral Actions If EU Recognizes Palestinian State
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar has strongly condemned the growing international push, led by countries such as France and Britain, to recognize Palestinian statehood, calling it a 'tremendous mistake' that could destabilize the region and provoke unilateral Israeli actions, including West Bank annexations. Sa'ar emphasized that recognition efforts ignore critical issues such as Palestinian Authority governance, terrorism, and incitement, asserting that the PA does not deserve statehood given its failure to address these concerns. Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, while not ready to recognize a Palestinian state currently, stated that Israel does not have a veto over Denmark’s potential future recognition and stressed that any Palestinian state must be disarmed, democratic, and recognize Israel. Rasmussen also called for an end to Israeli military offensives in Gaza, expressed concern about settlement expansion, and advocated for medical access for Gazans, highlighting Denmark's nuanced position amid ongoing tensions. The debate reflects broader international divisions, with many Western allies preparing to recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming UN General Assembly despite Israeli opposition and warnings of regional instability. Both ministers agreed that a resolution to the Gaza conflict hinges on Hamas disarming and releasing hostages, while disagreements persist over the path to a two-state solution and the legitimacy of unilateral recognition moves.
