Phoenix Opens $1.34B South Central Light Rail Extension
Phoenix has inaugurated its largest light rail expansion to date, the $1.34 billion South Central Extension and Downtown Hub, adding nearly five and a half miles of track and eight new stations that connect downtown Phoenix with the south-central corridor. This expansion transforms Valley Metro into a two-line system, with the A Line running east-west and the B Line running north-south, increasing weekday service frequency to every 12 minutes and expected to add 8,000 daily riders to the existing 32,000. Funded largely by federal grants alongside local initiatives like Transportation 2050 and Proposition 400, the project included enhancements such as a new park-and-ride facility, improved pedestrian and bike infrastructure, over 550 new trees, desert-adapted landscaping, and 18 public art installations. The extension faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, utility relocation challenges, and local opposition, but ultimately opened in June 2025, with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego emphasizing its role in advancing sustainability, accessibility, and connectivity across the Valley. The project took over a decade from planning in 2012 to completion, with construction starting in 2019 and utilizing 14 Siemens S700 light rail vehicles. Overall, the expansion aims to provide safer streets, new bike lanes, shade, and improved transit options for residents, supporting Phoenix's growth and urban development goals.
