Brennan, Clapper Reject Russiagate Conspiracy Allegations in NYT Op-Ed
Former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper strongly denied allegations from the Trump administration and former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard that they politicized the Russia election interference investigation. In a New York Times op-ed, they called such claims "patently false" and argued that multiple thorough investigations, including a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report chaired by then-Senator Marco Rubio, validated the intelligence community's conclusion that Russia conducted a campaign to influence the 2016 election in favor of Donald Trump. Brennan and Clapper also defended their handling of the Steele Dossier, asserting that it was part of the overall assessment despite claims to the contrary, and disputed accusations of collusion or conspiracy to undermine Trump. However, George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley criticized Brennan and Clapper for making "astonishing" claims that contradict evidence released by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, suggesting they could face further congressional scrutiny. Turley emphasized that Brennan’s previous congressional testimony appears contradicted by new evidence and that the possibility of an ongoing conspiracy could extend legal liabilities. The debate highlights continuing tensions over the origins and handling of the Russia probe and the accuracy and motivations behind the intelligence assessments made during the Obama administration.
