Guyana PPP Wins Second Term Amid Opposition Realignment
In the 2025 Guyana general election, the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) secured a decisive victory, ensuring President Irfaan Ali a second term and expanding the party's majority in the 65-seat National Assembly. The election marked a significant political realignment as the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, founded by U.S.-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, surged into second place, overtaking the long-dominant opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). WIN's rise reflects growing voter dissatisfaction with the traditional two-party system, especially among younger and multi-ethnic Guyanese, as it captured multiple districts and is projected to hold around 16 assembly seats. Conversely, APNU suffered its worst electoral performance, with a steep decline attributed in part to low voter turnout and the failure to form a coalition with the Alliance For Change (AFC), which itself failed to secure any seats. The election campaign centered on debates over the distribution of wealth from Guyana's booming offshore oil industry, with PPP emphasizing infrastructure and social investments funded by oil revenues, while opposition parties criticized alleged favoritism. Despite allegations against WIN's leader and his family regarding corruption, Mohamed attracted grassroots support, particularly from poor and Indigenous communities, through philanthropy and calls for equitable access to resources.
