Mbappé Sprains Ankle in Real Madrid Win
Real Madrid beat Villarreal 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu as Vinícius Júnior scored twice — including a penalty he was allowed to take by Kylian Mbappé — and Mbappé added the third. The match continued Mbappé’s electric form, bringing him to 14 goals across all competitions and a nine-game scoring run for club and country. Mbappé was substituted in the 83rd minute after going down and is being assessed for a mild sprain to his right ankle ahead of the October international break. Xabi Alonso said Mbappé felt “some slight discomfort,” that the club will monitor him alongside France’s medical staff with qualifiers looming, and reiterated that Mbappé remains the club’s designated penalty taker. The result put Real Madrid top of LaLiga, though the club must manage broader fitness concerns — including absences such as Dani Carvajal — which increase reliance on its attacking leaders.
