Solar Sharer to Begin July 2026, Retailers Say Surprised
The Albanese government unveiled the Solar Sharer, requiring retailers in Default Market Offer jurisdictions to provide at least three hours of free midday electricity when rooftop solar generation is abundant, starting in New South Wales, south‑east Queensland and South Australia from July 2026. Households with smart meters — whether they own solar or rent — can shift appliance use, EV charging and battery charging into the zero‑cost three‑hour window to claim savings. The policy is designed to absorb excess midday solar (Australia has over four million rooftop systems), cut evening peak demand, lower system and network costs, and expand protections for disengaged customers. The government plans consultations to extend the offer more broadly by 2027 as part of wider Default Market Offer reforms. Electricity retailers and the Australian Energy Council said they were caught by surprise and disappointed by the lack of prior consultation, warning it could undermine industry confidence.
