Yellow Heat Health Alerts Issued Across Most England Ahead 32C Temperatures
A yellow heat health alert has been issued across most of England from June 18 to June 22, with temperatures forecasted to reach up to 33°C (91°F) by Sunday, marking a potential heatwave. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns of significant impacts on health and social care services, including an increase in deaths, especially among those aged 65 and over or with chronic health conditions, as well as the risk of indoor overheating in care homes, hospitals, and vulnerable community settings. The alert covers regions including London, the South East, South West, Yorkshire and The Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, and East England, with temperatures rising day by day due to high pressure and southerly winds drawing warm air from continental Europe. Health experts advise people to avoid sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, wear suitable clothing, and ensure living spaces remain cool by closing windows during the day and ventilating at night. The Met Office has indicated that this could be the hottest period of the year so far, with some areas experiencing temperatures higher than usual for June, even surpassing those of Ibiza at times. The alert aims to prepare the public and health services for the challenges posed by prolonged heat, emphasizing care for the most vulnerable and readiness of health and social care staff.
