Manchester Synagogue Attack Kills Two, Arrests Made in Terror Probe
A terrorist attack occurred at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, resulting in two deaths and three serious injuries. The attacker, identified as 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent Jihad Al-Shamie, rammed a car into a crowd and then stabbed people before being shot dead by police. He was wearing a suspicious device later deemed not to be an explosive. Three additional suspects—two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s—have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses. Authorities emphasized the quick response of synagogue security and police in preventing further casualties, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemning the attack as antisemitic terrorism. The investigation continues to determine the motives and identify the victims, while additional security measures are being implemented at synagogues nationwide.
