13-Year-Old Rescued from Pittsburgh Basement

On Oct. 30, a 13-year-old girl from Baker, Louisiana, reported missing last week was found alive hidden in a sheet-covered box in the basement of a Pittsburgh home after a multi-state, multi-agency investigation led by U.S. Marshals with assistance from Louisiana State Police, the FBI, Pittsburgh SWAT and local authorities. Pittsburgh resident Ki-Shawn Crumity, 26, was arrested at the scene and is accused of trafficking the minor, multiple sex-related charges, and furnishing alcohol; investigators say the girl met him on Snapchat, that he promised adoption by a “trusted adult,” and that he gave her alcohol and edibles. Authorities say the girl traveled by bus from Baton Rouge and Columbus, Ga., through Washington, D.C., before arriving in Pittsburgh. Two other adults — including 62-year-old Ronald Smith, arrested in Columbus, Ga., and a Washington, D.C.-area woman — have been linked to the case and face kidnapping or related charges. Medical personnel determined the victim had been sexually assaulted; Crumity is being held in the Allegheny County Jail with bail denied, and officials say the investigation is ongoing with the possibility of additional arrests.
