Cameroon Post-Election Violence Kills 23 France Urges Citizen Protection
The French government has expressed serious concern over the violent crackdown on post-election protests in Cameroon, urging authorities to ensure the safety of citizens and respect democratic principles following the disputed October 2025 presidential election. At least 23 people have been killed as security forces suppress demonstrations sparked by the reelection of Paul Biya, Cameroon's longtime leader, whose victory has been contested by opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary and other critics alleging widespread electoral fraud. France called for the release of all individuals arbitrarily detained and stressed the importance of dialogue to restore peace and uphold the rule of law. U.S. lawmakers, including Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, have also condemned the violence and called for restraint, transparency, and respect for human rights amid the ongoing unrest, highlighting the deteriorating security situation and restrictions such as internet blackouts in protest areas. The U.S. and Western diplomats' absence from official election events signals international concern over the election's credibility and the government's heavy-handed response. Both France and the U.S. emphasize that repression must give way to constructive dialogue to preserve national cohesion and democratic freedoms in Cameroon.
