Stephen Strasburg joins San Diego State baseball as special assistant

Stephen Strasburg, former San Diego State Aztecs pitcher and 2019 World Series MVP, has joined the SDSU baseball program as a special assistant to head coach Kevin Vance. Strasburg, a San Diego native and three-time MLB All-Star, will contribute to pitching development, fundraising, special events, and act as a mentor to players, reflecting his deep commitment to his alma mater and hometown. He had a standout college career, winning major awards including the Golden Spikes Award, National Pitcher of the Year, and the Dick Howser Trophy, and setting multiple school records. Strasburg retired after a 13-year MLB career and was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025. Head coach Vance praised Strasburg for his dedication to giving back and fostering a growth environment for current players, emphasizing Strasburg's strong ties to SDSU and San Diego. The role honors the legacy of Tony Gwynn, Strasburg's former coach, who also returned to SDSU after a Hall of Fame MLB career.
