Texas Deputies Rescued After Lubbock Overpass Crash

Two Lubbock County Sheriff’s deputies, Andrew Cavasos and Jorge Martinez, were involved in a serious crash on Interstate 27 near 98th Street while assisting a stranded motorist changing a tire. A distracted semitruck driver, Gregory Vaught, who was trying to reconnect a Bluetooth device, collided with the deputies' patrol vehicles, pushing one vehicle against the deputies and pinning them against a concrete barrier. Deputy Cavasos was seen hanging headfirst from the overpass, held only by his vehicle, until bystanders heroically intervened with a ladder and helped lift him back to safety. Both deputies were hospitalized but have since been released, and the truck driver also suffered moderate injuries and was released from the hospital. Sheriff Kelly Rowe praised the quick actions of the good Samaritans who likely saved the deputies' lives and noted the ongoing investigation by local authorities. No criminal charges have been filed so far in connection with the incident.
