Steelers Confirm Calvin Austin III as Wide Receiver Two Behind DK Metcalf
The Pittsburgh Steelers have named Calvin Austin III as their starting No. 2 wide receiver alongside newly acquired DK Metcalf, despite some skepticism about the depth of their receiver group following George Pickens' trade. Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni praised Austin's ability to get separation, his versatility, and leadership, emphasizing that Austin and Metcalf complement each other with very different playing styles. Austin, who had a breakout 2024 season with 548 receiving yards and four touchdowns, is expected to play a key role in Aaron Rodgers' offense this year, stretching the field and providing a shifty underneath target. While the Steelers have inquired about other potential playmakers like Chris Olave and Terry McLaurin, the current receiver group is being viewed as a committee with Austin firmly holding the WR2 spot for now. Veterans Robert Woods and second-year player Roman Wilson add depth and competition to the receiving corps. Despite the team's limited proven talent beyond Metcalf, Azzanni welcomes the underdog status, hoping to leverage the group's underrated potential in the upcoming season.
