House Republicans propose $200 annual fee for electric vehicles
U.S. House Republicans have proposed a new federal annual registration fee targeting electric and hybrid vehicles as part of broader transportation funding legislation. The plan would require electric vehicle owners to pay a $200–$250 yearly fee, while hybrid vehicle owners would pay $100, with these amounts adjusted annually for inflation. The proposal aims to compensate for lost revenue from gasoline taxes, which electric vehicle owners do not pay, and is intended to fund road repairs and infrastructure. Unlike previous proposals, a flat $20 fee for all vehicles has been dropped in favor of higher fees specifically for EVs. Commercial and farm vehicles would be exempt, raising concerns about potential loopholes. The committee is set to consider the measure, which reflects ongoing debates over how best to fund road infrastructure in an era of increasing electric vehicle adoption.
