AI Powers Growing Share of Tech Industry Code
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that up to 30% of the code in Microsoft's repositories is now generated by AI tools, with AI performing better in Python than C++. The announcement came at Meta’s LlamaCon conference during a discussion with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who projected that up to half of Meta’s development could be done by AI within a year. Google CEO Sundar Pichai reported that over 25% of new code at Google is AI-generated, and companies such as Duolingo and Shopify are also moving toward increased automation. Both Nadella and Zuckerberg acknowledged that AI-generated code presents challenges, particularly with regard to security and reliability. The adoption of agentic AI and autonomous agents is accelerating the transformation of software development. However, industry leaders caution that fully autonomous and reliable AI coding at scale remains years away.
