Shein, Reliance Plan Global Sales India-Made Apparel
Shein, the Singapore-based fast-fashion retailer, and Reliance Retail of India are collaborating to expand Indian manufacturing of Shein-branded apparel and begin exporting these India-made clothes internationally within the next year. The partnership aims to increase the number of Indian suppliers from 150 to 1,000 to support both domestic sales through SheinIndia.in and listings on Shein's US and UK e-commerce platforms, diversifying production away from China amid rising U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports. Shein initially entered the Indian market in 2018 but faced a ban in 2020 due to government actions against Chinese-affiliated companies; it re-entered India in February 2025 through a licensing agreement with Reliance. Reliance, led by Mukesh Ambani, is investing in supplier capabilities, including synthetic fabric production, to support Shein's global export ambitions, while pursuing an on-demand production model to scale manufacturing based on demand. The companies have been in discussions for months and plan to launch international sales of Indian-made apparel within six to twelve months, though timelines may adjust as the supplier network grows. Both companies emphasize that the move will not only bolster India's manufacturing sector but also cater to Shein's primary markets, including the United States and United Kingdom.
