UK Government Backs Bradford Hydrogen Plant for Clean Energy, Jobs
The UK government has signed a Low Carbon Hydrogen Agreement with N-Gen Energy Solutions and Hygen Energy to develop a large-scale hydrogen production facility in Bradford, part of a £2 billion funding initiative supporting 11 hydrogen projects nationwide. The Bradford plant, set to begin operations in 2027, will produce up to 12.5 tonnes of hydrogen daily using electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, enough to fuel 800 heavy vehicles such as buses, thereby helping decarbonize the mobility sector and heavy industry. This project is expected to create up to 125 jobs and provide significant economic benefits to the local area, while aligning with the broader government Plan for Change aimed at reducing industrial emissions and fostering green energy innovation. Sarah Jones, Minister for Industry, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in transitioning away from fossil fuels and supporting industrial renewal in Britain's heartlands. The facility is being developed on the site of former gas holders at Bowling Back Lane and involves partnerships with prominent figures and companies, including JCB scion Jo Bamford. The project exemplifies the government’s commitment to scaling hydrogen production as a clean energy solution, complementing other renewable initiatives such as wind and solar power.
