India, UK Negotiate Free Trade Agreement Amid Growing Economic Ties

India and the UK are intensifying negotiations to finalize a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) after more than three years of discussions, with both nations under additional pressure due to ongoing US tariffs under President Trump. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and British Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds met in London for two days of talks aimed at resolving the remaining issues, including tariffs on goods such as whiskey, cars, and agricultural products, as well as regulations on pharmaceuticals and investments. Both parties have expressed optimism, noting that contentious issues like whiskey and auto tariffs have reportedly been settled, while social security exemptions for Indian workers may be addressed in a separate treaty. The UK government emphasized its commitment to securing a deal that improves business access, cuts tariffs, and simplifies trade. The FTA also seeks to enhance opportunities for Indian skilled professionals in the UK and expand British services in India. These negotiations are part of broader efforts by both countries to secure favorable trade terms amid shifting global trade dynamics.
