Scientists Win Nobel Physics Prize amid Trump Nobel Claims
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis for 1984–85 experiments that demonstrated macroscopic quantum tunnelling and quantised energy levels in superconducting circuits, work that laid the foundation for superconducting quantum computing. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, quoting Energy Secretary Chris Wright, to claim the prize as evidence that “Quantum computing, along with AI and Fusion, are the three signature Trump science efforts,” even declaring “Trump 47 racks up his first Nobel Prize.” There is no independent evidence the Department of Energy issued the quoted statement, and the Nobel citation and timeline make clear the research predates Trump’s political career. Trump’s reference may stem from Clarke’s past affiliation with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, but commentators and political critics dismissed the post as an attempt to take credit for decades-old science. The White House did not immediately clarify Wright’s alleged remarks, and critics framed the move as another self-promotional bid amid Trump’s long-running pursuit of Nobel recognition.
