Carbon Ridge Deploys First Centrifugal Carbon Capture On Scorpio Tanker
Carbon Ridge has successfully deployed the shipping industry's first centrifugal onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) aboard the LR2 product tanker STI SPIGA owned by Scorpio Tankers, marking a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization. The pilot project, initiated in July 2025 at Besiktas Shipyard in Turkey, features a modular design that reduces capital and operational costs while delivering superior capture efficiency, occupying up to 75% less space than conventional OCCS systems and allowing flexible installation options. This fuel-agnostic, scalable technology is designed for both retrofit and newbuild vessels without requiring major propulsion system changes, enabling shipowners to meet stringent climate targets and regulatory compliance. Captured CO2 is compressed, liquefied, and safely stored throughout the voyage, with an end-to-end solution ensuring full value-chain compliance with maritime and regional regulations. Carbon Ridge has also secured additional financing led by Katapult Ocean and Alfa8 to scale its carbon capture and logistics solutions globally. Industry leaders, including Scorpio Tankers' COO Cameron Mackey, praised the technology’s practical and innovative approach to supporting the shipping sector's decarbonization efforts.
