South Korea Finds Toxic Substances in Clothing
Seoul authorities conducted inspections on 144 products from fast-fashion retailers Shein, Temu, and AliExpress, revealing that many items contained toxic substances at levels significantly exceeding legal limits. Notably, one pair of Shein shoes contained phthalates at 229 times the legal threshold, raising concerns over reproductive health risks. Additionally, Temu's sandal insoles were found to have lead levels 11 times higher than permitted. The findings have prompted calls for the removal of these products from sale and heightened scrutiny of the companies' safety standards. Both Shein and Temu have initiated internal investigations and pledged to enhance compliance with safety regulations following the report. This incident marks a continuation of concerns regarding the safety of fast-fashion goods, particularly in South Korea.
