Wisconsin's Great Pinery Heritage Waterway Gains National Recreation Trail Status

The Great Pinery Heritage Waterway, a scenic stretch of the Wisconsin River and its tributaries, has been designated a National Recreation Trail by the National Park Service, highlighting its value as a premier paddling destination. This designation covers approximately 20 to 21 miles of the waterway, celebrated for its natural beauty, historic dam sites, and cultural heritage, and contributes to bolstering the local economy and community identity in Marathon County. With this recognition, Marathon County now boasts two national trails, including the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The designation supports efforts to preserve public access, expand signage, and inspire future generations of paddlers, while environmental restoration has enhanced the river's health and recreational infrastructure. The Wausau and Marathon County Parks and Recreation Foundation played a key role in securing the designation, overcoming a competitive application process, and plans to extend the trail further.
