Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo Killed at Candlelight Event

Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan in violence-plagued Michoacán, was shot Saturday during a Day of the Dead candlelight event in the city center and later died at a hospital. Authorities said two suspects were detained, one assailant was killed at the scene, and police recovered a 9mm handgun; video showed crowds fleeing after gunfire. Manzo, who took office in September 2024, had repeatedly urged the federal government and publicly criticized President Claudia Sheinbaum’s anti-crime approach and had posted videos saying he feared for his life. The killing follows a recent wave of assassinations of local officials, journalists and activists in Mexico and came shortly after the slaying of Michoacán farmer representative Bernardo Bravo. Authorities said they continue to investigate the motive and circumstances of the attack.
