Woman, 71, dies in M1 crash near Barnsley, police seek witnesses

A 71-year-old woman died and a 71-year-old man was seriously injured after a grey Volvo XC40 crashed on the M1 southbound between junctions 36 and 37 near Barnsley. The car hit the central barrier and left the carriageway at around 9:23am on Thursday, prompting emergency service response, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was hospitalized with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. The M1 was closed in both directions for several hours while police investigated, and has since reopened. South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to help their investigation. The families of those involved have been informed and are being supported by authorities.
