Ethiopia Mobilizes Millions to Plant 700 Million Trees in One Day

Ethiopia has launched a massive environmental campaign under its Green Legacy Initiative to plant 700 million trees in a single day, aiming to combat climate change, restore degraded land, and enhance food security. Since its start in 2019, the initiative has mobilized over 20 million Ethiopians to plant more than 40 billion seedlings, surpassing initial goals and significantly increasing the country's forest coverage. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has championed the campaign, called on citizens nationwide to participate, framing the effort as a patriotic duty and a vital step toward a greener, more resilient future. The campaign has drawn widespread participation, including support from public offices and international communities, with Pakistan joining the effort as part of a broader global solidarity against climate change. By mid-day during the latest campaign, Ethiopians had already planted over 517 million seedlings, moving steadily toward the ambitious target. The initiative also contributes to Ethiopia's commitments to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action and zero hunger.
