Scottish Government Approves 4.1GW Berwick Bank Offshore Wind Farm

The Scottish Government has approved SSE Renewables' 4.1 GW Berwick Bank offshore wind farm, which could become the world's largest and generate enough electricity to power around six million homes annually, or roughly 17% of UK households. The project, located off the East Lothian coast, will feature up to 307 turbines and is expected to create over 9,300 jobs at peak construction, significantly boosting Scotland's renewable energy capacity and progress toward net zero emissions by 2045. Approval is contingent upon SSE providing a detailed seabird compensation plan, as conservation groups including RSPB Scotland have strongly criticized the project for its potentially catastrophic impact on seabird populations. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes emphasized the project's importance for Scotland's green economy and energy security, while UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the decision brings the UK closer to its offshore wind targets for 2030.
