Mansfield Town Signs Former Millwall Goalkeeper Liam Roberts

Liam Roberts has signed a two-year contract with Mansfield Town after being released by Championship side Millwall, where he made six appearances in the 2024-25 season. Mansfield manager Nigel Clough expressed confidence in Roberts, highlighting his Championship and League One experience and noting that he fits the team's need for a first-choice goalkeeper. Roberts, 30, has played for several clubs including Walsall, Northampton Town, Middlesbrough, and Barnsley, earning accolades like the EFL Golden Glove and a place in the PFA League Two Team of the Season during his time at Northampton. His tenure at Millwall was marked by a six-game suspension following a red card for a reckless challenge on Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, which resulted in significant injury to Mateta and subsequent online abuse directed at Roberts, condemned by Millwall. Despite contract extension talks, Roberts and Millwall could not reach an agreement, prompting his move to Mansfield to replace outgoing first-choice goalkeeper Christy Pym. The club and manager are optimistic about Roberts becoming their new number one goalkeeper.
