Katie Boulter Reports Death Threats from Tennis Gamblers at French Open
British tennis player Katie Boulter has revealed receiving numerous death threats and abusive messages targeting her and her family during the French Open, with much of the abuse believed to stem from disgruntled gamblers upset over betting outcomes. Despite winning her match against Carole Monnet, Boulter faced vitriolic messages including threats of violence and hateful remarks, which she shared publicly to highlight the severity of the issue. She expressed concern about the increasing volume and severity of online abuse and its detrimental impact on younger players entering the sport. In response, tennis organizations such as the International Tennis Federation, Women’s Tennis Association, All England Lawn Tennis Club, and United States Tennis Association launched the Threat Matrix initiative to monitor and combat abusive content on social media platforms and provide support to players. Boulter emphasized that such abuse has become a norm in tennis, underscoring the urgent need for continued protective measures. The data reveals thousands of abusive incidents tied largely to frustrations over gambling losses, posing a growing challenge for the sport’s integrity and player welfare.
