Atlantic Disturbance Expected to Form Tropical Depression This Week
Forecasters are closely monitoring a tropical disturbance in the eastern Atlantic that has a high likelihood of developing into a tropical depression later this week, with probabilities around 70% over seven days. The system is moving west-northwestward across the tropical Atlantic and is currently limited by dry air, but conditions may become more favorable for strengthening as the week progresses. Despite the potential development, current forecasts suggest it is unlikely to impact the U.S. East Coast, including Puerto Rico and the continental United States, due to steering currents such as fronts and jet stream dips. The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been moderately active so far, with six named storms, and NOAA continues to anticipate an above-average season overall. Meteorologists will continue to monitor this system, which would be named Gabrielle if it reaches tropical storm status. Other areas of the tropical Atlantic, Gulf, and Caribbean currently remain quiet, with no additional tropical threats expected in the immediate future.
