Cambodia Thailand begin simultaneous heavy weapons withdrawal under ASEAN oversight
Cambodia and Thailand have commenced a coordinated withdrawal of heavy weapons from their shared border as part of a landmark peace agreement aimed at reducing tensions and restoring stability along the frontier. Following a bilateral agreement signed in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, 2025, both countries began the first phase of demilitarisation on November 1, with ASEAN Observer Teams overseeing the removal of multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, and main battle tanks. Cambodian forces have pulled back significant artillery and rocket systems from Preah Vihear province, broadcasting the operation to underscore transparency and commitment. The phased withdrawal, scheduled to last three weeks with updates and verification from both sides, reflects mutual trust-building measures and aims to prevent further border conflicts. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized the importance of fulfilling key conditions such as weapon withdrawal, mine clearance, and border claim settlements, assuring public confidence in the military's readiness to defend sovereignty. Both nations have pledged continued cooperation to fully and transparently implement the Joint Declaration on Peace and Cooperation to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
