Sudan RSF Chief Orders Probe After El Fasher Mass Civilians Killings
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the key Darfur city of el-Fasher, leading to widespread reports of mass civilian killings, including nearly 500 civilians shot at the city's last partially functioning hospital. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and other international bodies have condemned the violence, calling for swift, transparent investigations and accountability for the atrocities, which include summary executions, rape, and attacks on humanitarian workers. RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, has expressed regret over the events and ordered investigations into violations committed by his forces, but skepticism remains high among humanitarian officials and foreign governments regarding RSF's accountability. The RSF denies allegations that the killings were ethnically motivated, though survivors, doctors, and rights groups describe the situation as a massacre with targeted violence against non-Arab populations in Darfur. The conflict has displaced tens of thousands of civilians, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region already strained by long-standing conflict. Meanwhile, activists have called for international pressure on the United Arab Emirates, accused of supporting the RSF, a charge denied by the UAE despite UN reports.
