India Seeks Global AI Leadership, Supports Global South

India is positioning itself as a leader in the global artificial intelligence (AI) movement, with officials aiming to deploy AI at scale across government and businesses. S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, stated that India seeks to shape AI's future through innovation and global cooperation, emphasizing a regulatory approach that supports rather than stifles innovation. The country plans to leverage its robust digital public infrastructure (DPI) to enhance AI applications, aiming for what officials describe as a 'Mangalyaan moment' in AI akin to its successful Mars Orbiter Mission. This initiative includes sharing digital infrastructure with friendly nations, particularly in the Global South, to ensure that innovations benefit developing countries. Additionally, Nandan Nilekani, chairman of Infosys, highlighted the need to address challenges in scaling AI and fostering trust in non-human decision-making. Overall, India aims to transform its AI landscape into a national resource that can drive significant advancements across various sectors.
