An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, resulting in one of India's worst aviation disasters. The plane, bound for London Gatwick, crashed into the hostel mess of BJ Medical College in Meghani Nagar, causing a massive explosion and fire that engulfed the building where medical students were likely having lunch. The crash site showed devastating damage, with rescue teams including the National Disaster Response Force deployed to assist, while the full extent of casualties and damage remains unclear, though more than 200 bodies have been recovered. Among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian, and it is unclear if casualties include people on the ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu is personally monitoring the situation as investigations begin. Air India chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran also expressed profound sorrow, and authorities continue rescue and relief efforts amid the ongoing emergency.
