San Jose Engineer Pleads Guilty to Bombing PG&E Transformers

Peter Karasev, a 38-year-old engineer from San Jose, pleaded guilty to federal charges for bombing two PG&E electrical transformers in December 2022 and January 2023, resulting in widespread power outages that affected over 1,500 customers and caused significant property damage. Karasev admitted his attacks were premeditated and involved homemade explosives, with surveillance footage placing him at the scenes. Following his arrest in March 2023, authorities discovered over 300 pounds of explosive precursor materials, hazardous chemicals, firearms, and remote detonation devices at his home, vehicle, and office, posing a substantial public safety risk. The attacks were described by officials as calculated acts of domestic sabotage targeting essential infrastructure. Karasev faces between 8.5 and 10.5 years in federal prison and has agreed to pay more than $104,000 in restitution. He is also facing related state charges, including child endangerment and arson, with sentencing scheduled for August 19, 2024.
