Memphis, Clackamas Counties Open Large Public Housing Waitlists

The Memphis Housing Authority (MHA) is reopening public housing waitlists for select communities from August 6 to August 7, offering affordable housing opportunities for individuals and families in need. Existing applicants on other MHA waitlists, such as the Housing Choice Voucher and Project-Based Voucher programs, can apply for public housing using their RentCafe login credentials, with public housing guaranteeing eventual placement for qualified applicants. MHA is contacting those currently on waitlists to confirm their interest, removing those who do not respond. Similarly, the Housing Authority of Clackamas County in Oregon has opened its project-based voucher waitlist through July 31, marking the first time since 2020 the list has been available, with a lottery system selecting roughly 500 applicants from an expected 5,000 to 8,000 submissions. These vouchers provide rent assistance tied to specific units, and applicants must meet income eligibility requirements capped at 50% of the area median income. Both authorities provide in-person application assistance and emphasize that applying does not guarantee placement, with random lotteries determining waitlist selection.
