Recess Raises $30M, Names Ex-Nutrabolt Exec Co-CEO Amid Functional Beverage Expansion

Recess, a functional beverage startup founded in 2018, has raised $30 million in a Series B funding round led by Cavu Consumer Partners to expand its team, retail distribution, and marketing efforts. The company, known for its 'relaxation over stimulation' drinks, aims to counterbalance the $25 billion energy drink market with products designed to promote calm and mental wellness. Recess's portfolio includes magnesium-based Mood sparkling waters, Zero Proof Craft Mocktails, and hemp-infused original sparkling waters, which are sold in over 15,000 stores including Target, Kroger, and Whole Foods. Alongside the funding, Recess appointed Kyle Thomas, former global chief commercial officer at Nutrabolt (owner of C4 Energy), as president and co-CEO to help scale the business. Investors emphasize the growing consumer demand for relaxation-focused products, especially amid declining U.S. alcohol consumption and a cultural shift towards sober-curious lifestyles. The funding will support Recess in accelerating growth and expanding its presence in the functional beverage market.
