Michigan Freshman QB Bryce Underwood Shows Promise Despite Mixed Early Performances
Michigan's true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood has shown promising talent and solid decision-making in his first two games, leading the Wolverines to a win over New Mexico and struggling only in a loss to Oklahoma where the offense faced rhythm and communication issues. Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey praised Underwood for his ball security and handling pressure but noted that the team's offensive rhythm suffered against Oklahoma's strong defense, which limited explosive runs and third-down conversions. Underwood's dual-threat ability, especially his rushing potential, has yet to be fully utilized, with coaches adopting a conservative approach to protect him from injury. High school coach Calvin Norman and an anonymous opposing coach both emphasized that Underwood's full potential, particularly his running ability, remains untapped and anticipate a more dynamic performance once he is given more freedom. Central Michigan's coach Matt Drinkall also expressed high regard for Underwood’s decisiveness and skillset, calling him incredibly gifted and well-coached despite being a freshman. Michigan is preparing to host Central Michigan next, with Underwood expected to continue developing as the team aims to improve its offensive execution.
