Popovich Named Spurs President of Basketball Operations

Gregg Popovich, the NBA’s all-time winningest coach with 1,422 regular season victories and five championships, is stepping down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs after 29 seasons and will become president of basketball operations. Popovich’s leadership established a Spurs dynasty and set a record with 22 consecutive postseason appearances. His departure follows recent health issues, including a mild stroke in November 2024 that resulted in an extended absence. Popovich’s coaching tree has greatly influenced the NBA, with numerous current and former head coaches connected to him. He is widely recognized for his tactical brilliance, humor, and mentorship. Long-time assistant Mitch Johnson has been named the new Spurs head coach.
