WerQfest Celebrates Black Queer Creativity in St. Louis
WerQfest, a St. Louis-based music and arts festival founded in 2020, has grown into a significant platform celebrating Black queer creativity, with its sixth edition set for July 12 at the new Atomic Pavilion. The festival, co-founded by Shelton Boyd-Griffith and Tre’von Griffith, has become a discovery space for both local and national queer artists, featuring headliners like R&B vocalist Avery Wilson and local talents such as Deion Golliday and Soumir. WerQfest has expanded its mission by collaborating with community groups like Strawberry Bounce and Queer Voices NYC to foster community and highlight the creative legacy of the Midwest. Meanwhile, drag communities across the country, such as those in Tampa Bay, Houston, and Lubbock, continue to emphasize the importance of visibility, community support, and activism in the face of rising anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Houston's Drag University, a free program focusing on Black and Latino queer Texans, empowers participants with performance skills and life navigation tools amid increasing state hostility. Despite challenges including restrictions on drag performances and funding cuts, drag performers and communities remain committed to creating safe, affirming spaces and encouraging individuals to express their identity unapologetically.
