The crash occurred on U.S. Highway 20 near Henry's Lake, in the Idaho section close to the park's western entrance, blocking the highway for nearly seven hours as emergency teams responded. Of the 14 people in the van, six died along with the driver of the pickup truck; several injured passengers were airlifted to hospitals due to the seriousness of their injuries. Authorities have not released details about the victims while families are being notified, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
