Skip Lorry Driver Arrested After Fatal Crash Kills Former Councillor in Riccall
John Michael Duggan, an 81-year-old former North Yorkshire councillor known for campaigning to improve safety at a dangerous junction, died following a collision between his Nissan Juke and a DAF skip lorry on the A19 at Riccall. The crash occurred as Duggan was joining the A19 from York Road, and despite being airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The 42-year-old driver of the skip lorry from York was arrested at the scene and is assisting police with their inquiries. North Yorkshire Police have closed the road for several hours to investigate and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Duggan was remembered by colleagues as a dedicated and passionate advocate for his community, described as a 'crusading councillor' and a family man who loved Riccall deeply. His family is being supported by specially trained officers as the investigation continues.
