Southern University Launches Student-Operated WSUB 106.1 FM Radio Station

Southern University has officially launched its new student-operated radio station, WSUB 106.1 LPFM “The Bluff,” replacing the longstanding gospel station WTQT. The station, managed by operations manager and Southern alumna Nicolette Gordon and program director Jammin Jacque Griffin, broadcasts 24/7 with a music blend including gospel, hip-hop, R&B, and pop, while emphasizing cultural awareness and local talent. WSUB serves as a practical training ground for students in the Department of Mass Communication, providing hands-on experience in radio, podcasting, audio production, and media management, alongside coursework such as Introduction to Radio. The initiative aims to transform student lives by preparing them for media industry careers and strengthening their connection to the Baton Rouge community's rich cultural heritage. Southern University leadership highlighted the station as part of the university's broader transformation to engage with the community and create opportunities for students, noting recent student successes including an Emmy award. The ceremonial transition occurred on August 1, with WSUB beginning regular programming shortly thereafter.
