Georgia, Poland score upsets as Greece, France cruise EuroBasket 2025 openers
Day 2 of the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 saw a mix of strong performances and surprising upsets. Georgia upset defending champions Spain 83-69, led by Toronto Raptors forward Sandro Mamukelashvili's all-around effort of 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, with Georgia outrebounding Spain 46-29 and securing a decisive run late in the game. Greece, powered by Giannis Antetokounmpo's 31 points, defeated Italy 75-66, capitalizing on Italy's poor scoring in the first and third quarters. Italy rebounded in their next game, beating Georgia 78-62 through strong defense and balanced scoring, notably from Saliou Niang and Simone Fontecchio. Poland also pulled off a major upset against Slovenia, with Jordan Loyd scoring 32 points including seven three-pointers, while France dominated Belgium 92-64 with contributions from all 12 players. Israel defeated Iceland 83-71 behind Roman Sorkin's 31 points, showcasing the competitive intensity across the tournament's early stages.
