Sri Lanka Waives Visa Fees for 40 Countries to Boost Tourism

Sri Lanka has implemented a major visa fee waiver policy covering citizens from 40 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Canada, China, Australia, and Israel, aiming to boost its recovering tourism sector. The policy eliminates visa fees for 30-day tourist visas to attract more visitors and stimulate the economy, with officials expecting increased tourist spending to offset the loss in visa revenue. The inclusion of Israeli tourists has sparked criticism amid international concerns over Israel's military actions in Gaza and security threats targeting Israeli visitors in Sri Lanka. Additionally, the Maldives has reciprocated by offering Sri Lankan citizens a free 90-day on-arrival tourist visa, strengthening bilateral tourism cooperation. Sri Lankan officials emphasize that tourism is becoming a key contributor to the national economy and anticipate job creation and business growth from increased arrivals. These visa waivers simplify travel planning and make Sri Lanka a more attractive destination for leisure travelers, particularly from Europe, Asia, and North America.
